Calcium bisglycinate

Dear Dr. Colgan, What is the average absorption (percentage) of elemental calcium from the bisglycinate form? I'm curious as to how it compares to calcium from carbonate. Thanks! David Clenman

Hi David:  Almost all supplements will give you the "elemental" or absorbable amounts on the labels, so you do not need to know the acutal amount of calcium in the pill.  About 33% of carbonate is absorbed, but there is more calcium in the carbonate form than in the citrate for example, though the citrate form is better absorbed.  Let the chemists worry about these rates and just make sure that you buy quality supplements that state the minerals in "elemental" amounts.  CI
